This year’s films are:

Fear and Trembling Certificate 12A : 107 min

From Ameie Nothomb’s best selling novel, this comedy of office manners tracks a Belgian translator through the minefield of corporate Tokyo. Darkly humourous with excellent performances from Sylvie Testud and Kaori Tsuji.

Showing on 17th September 2008.

Once Certificate 15 : 85 min

Multi award winning inspirational musical tale of two kindred spirits who find each other on the bustling streets of Dublin.

Showing on 15th October 2008.

We Shall Overcome (tbc) Certificate 12A : 109 min

This was the film that held our audience enthralled last season, even through multiple stops and starts caused by a poor DVD. Anyone who didn’t see it last year - it’s very good! If you’d like to see it properly this year - please stay and enjoy it as it should be enjoyed.

Showing on 15th October 2008.

The Kite Runner Certificate 12 : 122 min

Based on the novel by Khaled Hosseini. The Kite runner is a tale of friendship, family, devastating mistakes and redeeming love.

Showing on 19th November 2008.

Grow Your Own Certificate PG : 97 min

Real life, true love and plump vegetables, this nourishing, magical tale is good enough to make gardeners of us all, well, the armchair variety perhaps.

Showing on 10th December 2008.

Honeydripper Certificate 12A : 124 min

A fable set in 1950’s Alabama. Great performances from Danny Glover as Tyrone Purvis, the proprietor of the Honeydripper Lounge, and newcomer Gary Clark Jnr. (you saw him here first.) The foot tapping soundtrack also deserves a mention.

Showing on 14th January 2009.

La Vie en Rose Certificate 12A : 135 min

The unnervingly accurate and Oscar winning performance by Marion Cotillrad as Edith Piaf has to be seen to be believed in this moving look into the life of the Little Sparrow.

Showing on 4th February 2009.

Happy Go Lucky (tbc) Certificate 15 : 114 min

Leigh’s trademark wit and eye for capturing contemporary London feature in this optimistic story. He confronts some serious issues, such as bullying and bigotry, with insight, compassion and humour.

Showing on 18th February 2009.

Water Certificate 12 : 93 min

Despite the harsh social conditions that gave rise to this work, the film is directed with a light and lively touch, more surprising given the Hindu fundamentalist threats against Deepa Mehta’s life and the Indian Government’s inability to guarantee her safety. Though set in Varanasi (Benares) in the 1930’s, the film tackles problems that remain unchanged and virtually unchallenged to this day. Lives were truly at risk in the making of this film, which was eventually completed in Sri Lanka.

Showing on 18th March 2009.

Son of Rambow Certificate 12A : 91 min

Keep an eye out for Eric Sykes while enjoying this very British take on growing up in 80’s England made with great visual flair and joyous tenderness. Preceded by AGM.

Showing on 22nd April 2009.
